Volunteer in Samoa on our combined Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care Project and gain valuable practical experience working alongside a qualified professional vet. If you are a student considering a career in veterinary medicine, a qualified vet, or an animal lover looking to give back, this project allows you to improve your skills and CV, raise awareness around better treatment of domestic pets, and meet the urgent need for animal health care of domestic animals.

We have partnered with an animal welfare organization that works mainly with cats and dogs. Local communities are often uninformed about the correct treatment of their domestic animals. As a result, pets are often badly treated, and dog and cat populations are too high.

By volunteering on this project, you will provide much needed assistance at the organization. You will contribute to improving the lives of pet cats and dogs through helping with routine veterinary procedures, and managing cat and dog populations. You will also play a major role in providing educational information in local communities to help improve the treatment of pets.

During your time in Samoa as a Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care intern, you will be placed in Samoa’s Capital, Apia, where you will be exposed to a wide variety of activities in a clinical setting. You will work with our partner organization, who focus mainly on reducing the number and improving the health of domestic animals. As an intern, we encourage you to observe and learn as much as you can from the professional vets working at the organization.

Depending on your skills, qualification and interests, you can get involved with the following activities:

  • Vaccinations
  • De-sexing
  • Running awareness campaigns for local communities – these will be in the form of educational seminars in delivered to school and community groups
  • Dog-training classes
  • Routine consultations with pet owners

On certain occasions, you will be required to assist with the general running of the organization. This could include:

  • General animal care work, such as
    • Cleaning kennels
    • Feeding animals
  • Administrative tasks
  • General cleaning of the clinic

Your service and dedication to the project will be invaluable to the animal welfare organisation as they strive to grow and improve the quality of life for domestic animals in Samoa.

If you have previous experience in animal care and veterinary medicine, you can strengthen the project further by offering your own insights and experiences for the benefit of animals in Samoa. Read more about volunteering as a professional.

“Another key element of the [project] was its interaction with school children; one of the staff at the centre would go out to local primary schools and educate the kids on proper behaviour around animals. I thought this was absolutely beautiful and the engagement from the kids was incredible. With songs and stories it was all so well thought out and age appropriate and I really hope it has a long term impact.” Read more...
