Volunteering on the Teaching Project in Vietnam with Projects Abroad is a chance for you to gain valuable teaching and classroom-based work experience while helping students gain the skills they need. Whether you are on a gap year, career break, or looking for a worthwhile experience during a vacation, you will have an important role to play as a teacher in one of our partner schools.

There is an enormous demand to learn English among Vietnam’s youth and it is taught in all secondary schools, many elementary schools, and in certain college departments in Hanoi, where the project is based. Although public schools are generally well-run, class sizes are large and students who struggle can be left behind. A volunteer teacher can make a significant impact by helping these students during class or running extra classes to help them catch up!

Volunteers can choose to teach English to college students who are studying towards a hospitality degree.

Please let us know which age group you would like to teach when you apply: elementary school (ages 6-10), secondary school (ages 10-15), or college (ages 18-21).

If you would prefer to teach in a more rural setting, we also offer placements in a rural area of Hanoi, the Ba Vi district. Please let us know if you are interested in this option when you apply.

The focus is on conversational English, so you don’t need any formal qualifications or TEFL training to join. However, we work closely with the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and they have their own requirements. All volunteers joining the Teaching Project in Vietnam need to be at least 18 years old and have completed a minimum of one semester at university or at least one year of work after finishing high school.

Volunteering as a Teacher in Hanoi, Vietnam

Since the mid-1960s Vietnam has followed an American model of education and administration and the country has recognized the rising prominence of English as the language of business and the importance of adapting the education system to the rapid pace of its economy. Tourism is also growing in Vietnam and speaking a high level of English is crucial to getting a good job within the tourism or business sectors.

As a volunteer teacher in Vietnam, your focus will be on teaching English and improving your students’ conversational abilities. You can also get involved with teaching extra-curricular activities such as art, drama, and music, depending on your skills and interests.

In most schools you will lead your own class, though a few schools will allow you to begin as a classroom assistant to support the local teacher in their lessons. At our partner schools, students range in age from 6 to 18 years old.

Whether you are teaching your own class or assisting another teacher, a large part of your role is to help improve the students’ English pronunciation. By teaching fun and inclusive lessons, you will develop your students’ confidence and impact their futures. They will be interested in learning about you and your life in your home country and you can take advantage of this to get them talking to you and each other.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Vietnam Teaching Management Plan.

Volunteering at a Teaching Placement in Vietnam with Projects Abroad

During the summer months when the schools are on vacation, local Projects Abroad staff arrange a summer school for the students. These summer classes are planned and taught by volunteers.

The Projects Abroad team in Vietnam also organizes teaching workshops every other month. These workshops allow volunteers to share effective teaching strategies with fellow volunteers and the Teaching Coordinator, and to discuss any problems faced in the classroom. Local volunteers and Vietnamese teachers are also invited to join the workshops so it’s a wonderful opportunity to share ideas, and experiences. The workshops usually involve brainstorming ideas, question and answer sessions, and general discussions. Any months when there is not a teaching workshop arranged, a similar Care Project workshop takes place that also covers useful topics for volunteer teachers.

The Teaching Project in Vietnam is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
