Teaching English Abroad in Fiji with Projects Abroad

Teaching volunteer reads a story to a class in a school in Fiji

Projects Abroad Fiji is based on the main island of Viti Levu. We work in primary and secondary schools in Nadi, Lautoka, and surrounding towns and villages. Education is not compulsory in Fiji, however 99 percent of Fijian children attend primary school as it is free to do so for the first eight years of schooling.

Fiji is becoming increasingly urbanized, thus speaking English is essential for getting a good job in both the booming tourist industry and other areas of business.

English is one of Fiji’s official languages, but most local children speak Fijian or the Fijian Hindi language at home.

Volunteer teachers usually start by working alongside the local Fijian staff to help improve conversational English. Through assisting with English lessons and introducing fun and interactive ways of learning, such as games and songs, you can improve the students' enthusiasm and develop their confidence. They are sure to be interested in you and your life, so you can take advantage of this by getting them talking about a wide variety of topics.

Volunteers who are also happy to teach sports, particularly rugby or football, will be in demand. If you have any other interests or subjects that you would like to teach – such as math, art, music or drama, we can match you to a school where you can incorporate these skills.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Fiji Teaching Management Plan.

International Volunteer Work on a Teaching Project in Fiji

Volunteering abroad as a teacher in Fiji, you will make an important contribution by improving students' spoken English and giving them the confidence that comes from being able to communicate more efficiently. You will also help increase cultural awareness and exchange, as the children learn about your background and customs while understanding theirs.

As a teaching volunteer, you may choose to focus on the Physical Education, Music, and Arts and Crafts (PEMAC) Program with Projects Abroad. You will teach elementary or high school students and, as a teaching assistant, follow a customized timetable. If you have artistic skills, you have the opportunity to teach music or arts and crafts. You will be spending part of your day in a formal teaching setting and you will have to follow the Fijian Ministry of Education’s formal dress code.

The Projects Abroad team in Fiji organize weekly workshops for our teaching volunteers. The workshops will provide you with a useful insight into the education system in Fiji and the background of the school where you’re working. You will also receive advice and suggestions regarding lesson planning, classroom discipline, and activities to carry out at your teaching placement.

The impact that volunteer teachers can make on the lives of their students can last a lifetime, but you will also be part of a much larger Projects Abroad volunteer network that is making a continuous contribution to the wider community.

This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.

While you’re in Fiji, you might also consider joining a 1 week Culture & Community Project. For more information, please visit our Community Village Project in Fiji page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.

Volunteer Profile Aaron Weir
Heather Carroll
Overall, the Projects Abroad Fiji experience changed my life. It offers so many things for the volunteer: you learn from the students; you learn from the other volunteers, who are from all walks of life; you learn from your host family; you can learn a new language; you teach others about yourself; and most importantly, you learn a ton about yourself by living with and helping others.
