Volunteering on the Rugby Project in Samoa with Projects Abroad is an ideal opportunity for anyone looking to gain and improve their coaching skills in the sport. Rugby is the sport that Samoa is most famous for and their national team is hugely successful, regularly playing in most major global tournaments.
As a volunteer on this project, you will work at the Samoa Rugby Union. The union was formed in 1924 and joined the International Rugby Board in 1988; it is also a member of the Federation of Oceania Rugby Union (FORU). The union has focused on instigating community initiatives at grassroots level, as well as developing talent in the High Performance Unit (HPU): a dedicated program that provides a unique environment for players, coaches, and referees to reach their full potential.
Volunteering on the Rugby Project in Samoa with Projects Abroad
Volunteer coaches will accompany Rugby Union staff on their community outreach program, Pacific in Union (PIU). The PIU visits schools in the area to coach children in rugby and physical education, as well as teach them about healthy living. Volunteers with more experience may also be able to work with the players in the High Performance Unit.
You could also be asked to teach basic English classes to the players. This is important, as many of them have only a basic command of the language and will need to improve their language skills if they hope to become professional players one day.
Whether you are teaching children new skills and encouraging them to develop their talents, or helping players in the High Performance Unit to improve their game, you will be able to gain meaningful practical experience while making a positive impact on their lives
The Rugby Project in Samoa is available from two weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
The Samoa Rugby Union also welcomes qualified physiotherapists to work with the teams. For more information, please see our opportunities for professional physiotherapists in Samoa.
