By participating on a Community Sports Project in Morocco with Projects Abroad, you will not only teach children the importance of sport and keeping fit, but you will also inspire them by acting as a mentor and role model and helping them improve their self-confidence. We welcome volunteers of all skill levels, whether you are on a gap year, career break, or vacation.
Playing sport is more than simply a physical activity. It can be a rewarding experience for children to participate in because it develops team work skills and teaches fair play and respect. Having access to sports also helps communities as sport focuses the minds of younger people, occupying them with a more worthwhile activity.
To take part in this project, you do not need to have any previous experience in coaching but you do need to have a passion for sports and fitness. We also reccommend learning some basic French or Arabic, which will make it easier to communicate with the children you work with. If you would like to brush up on your skills or learn some of the basics, you can join a French or Arabic Language Course before or during your placement.
Volunteering as a Sports Coach in Morocco with Projects Abroad
If you have a passion for sports and community development, then you can help to coach children in soccer, basketball, or volleyball. You will work with a partner organization in Rabat that facilitates sports within the community for disadvantaged children.
When taking part in this Community Sports program, you will be supervised by experienced staff who are always open to hearing your suggestions. They will show you how things are done, and depending on your confidence you will be able to coach a team on your own.
Volunteers work from Monday to Friday, for at least 20 hours per week. You will have the option of working during the mornings or afternoons. Occasionally, you will be required to work on weekends to assist with extra activities, or travel with the organization to a different town or city to help facilitate sports matches.
There are about 14 to 20 groups of children who participate in the soccer, basketball, or volleyball program at a time, so the need for volunteer assistance is increasing. Please let us know where your interests lie once you have applied.
All our volunteers live with local host families in Rabat and will have the opportunity to explore their surroundings on the weekend and join in activities such as visiting markets, going scuba diving, camel trekking, and more.
You can join a Community Sports Project in Morocco for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
