Sports are extremely popular in Argentina and there are many children who want to participate. However, a lack of resources means that their opportunities are limited. As a volunteer on our After School Sports Project in Argentina, you can provide enthusiastic young athletes with training in various sports and help them develop their general fitness through games and activities.
To join this project, you will need to speak basic Spanish. However, you do not need previous coaching experience to participate. All you need is a passion for sports and fitness, and the local coaches will help you in any way that they can.
Volunteering as a Sports Coach in Argentina
In Argentina, we are partnered with two local community initiatives that teach sports to children and teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds. The youth that attend these classes range in age from 5 to 18 years. The focus of the project is on soccer and field hockey, and you will teach a class or provide training for three hours every day. You will also spend at least two hours of your day planning for these classes and training sessions.
There will be students of all abilities, offering you a huge amount of diversity as a coach – you could spend a few hours a day on advanced skills with older children, then organize small team games for younger students, and finish with a training session for young adults.
During your time at the project, you will also have the opportunity to work with teenagers from one of our Human Rights Project placements. Here, you will be in charge of planning and structuring the practice sessions for groups of 10-15 teenage boys.
Your Role at the Sports Project in Argentina
Regardless of the sport you are coaching, you will help to develop students’ basic skills and techniques. Once you arrive in Argentina, you will be introduced to the students and your supervisor. You will work with the local teacher to help coordinate and prepare for coaching sessions. In addition to this, tasks may include planning match strategies, leading practice games, and assisting in team selection.
There are typically between 30 and 35 students in a group. You will find that every player is different and will greatly benefit from your specialized care and attention. In turn, this will improve the performance of the team as a whole.
Emphasis is also put on enjoyment and participation. The students attending these classes are excited about playing the sports they love. Therefore, your role will be to help make sure the fun and enthusiasm continues in every lesson you teach. As a volunteer from abroad, just your presence will help make each session enjoyable and is vital to maintaining the interest of the children.
The sports clubs are closed from late November through to mid-March or sometimes early April. During this period, you will be able to work in summer schools where sports such as swimming and soccer are combined with a variety of recreational activities. The teachers need the help of our volunteers to support the children attending.
The After School Sports Project in Argentina is available from three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
