Projects Abroad Disaster Relief volunteers assist with the building of a classroom in Kathmandu, Nepal.

In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that struck Nepal in April 2015 and damaged or destroyed more than 24,000 classrooms, Projects Abroad identified an urgent need to set up alternative learning spaces for children. Any assistance you can provide on the Disaster Relief program will help children return to a normal school environment more quickly.

On this two-week program, you will join a group and contribute to important relief work in Kathmandu over the winter break. You do not need any previous construction experience to volunteer but you should be physically fit.

Your group will focus on building temporary schools, working under the supervision of a civil engineer and a skilled mason. Although the mason cannot speak English, a local Projects Abroad staff member will serve as a translator on the building site. You will get involved in a variety of tasks on-site, such as mixing cement, painting, and digging trenches.

In Nepal, you and the other volunteers in your group will stay in a hotel. In the evenings, you can enjoy socializing with the other volunteers at cultural and leisure activities organized by our local staff. Over the weekend, volunteers will travel together on a trip to Pokhara.

If you are a high school student and first-time traveller you may want to consider our High School Special programs in Nepal.
