As a Physical Therapy intern in Nepal you will experience firsthand how a busy physical therapy department works. There are limited people with physical therapy skills in Nepal. You will shadow and observe local medical staff and depending on your skills and interests may be able to build up to a more active role. If you are a trained physical therapist, you will find yourself busy and in demand.
Physical Therapy interns work in hospitals and centers for people with disabilities. Interns often come across neglected orthopedic conditions such as TB, polio, post-burn contractures, and cerebral palsy. You might work with inpatients and with outpatients who attend a couple of times in the week, sometimes traveling many hours to receive care.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Nepal Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
Interning Abroad as a Physical Therapist in Nepal with Projects Abroad
Physical Therapy interns work at a variety of facilities in Nepal. You could work in a rehabilitation center for disabled children or adults who have been involved in accidents. The centers offer therapy services to Nepali children and adults to improve their standard of living and provide support and care. You also could work in the physical therapy department of a large hospital. Please let us know if you have any placement preferences when you apply.
Wherever you are working, you will be able to add valuable experience to your resume. You will encounter conditions you may not see at home while helping out these short-staffed institutions.
In addition to daily work at the main facility where you are placed, you may be able to take part in various medical outreach programs, including visits to schools or a health camp.
During your stay, you will live with one of our host families, who sometimes will also be members of staff where you work. You will have the chance to spend your free time with the Projects Abroad volunteer community experiencing the sites and culture of Nepal.
Physical Therapy internships in Nepal are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
