Projects Abroad offers you the opportunity to gain experience in the field of physiotherapy by interning in a hospital environment in Ghana. As an intern you will be exposed to a wide variety of conditions, and treatments may differ greatly from what you are used to at home.
In Ghana, you will be shadowing physiotherapy staff and learning how care is offered in these facilities. How much hands-on work you can do will depend on your qualifications and experience and how much you involve yourself when working.
When you first arrive at the hospital where you are working you will discuss your work schedule with the Projects Abroad co-ordinator and a member of the hospital staff who will be your placement supervisor.
Interning as a Physiotherapist in Ghana with Projects Abroad
Physiotherapy interns are based in Cape Coast at the main regional hospital. It is one of the more modern hospitals in Ghana, with a wide range of departments and a large amount of new equipment. There is also the option of working in a centre for children with special needs. They have a basic physiotherapy room where the children do their exercises every day. There is a wide range of needs due to the varying disabilities, so they are grateful for all the assistance they can get in this area. Working at the special needs centre could also be combined with a Care project.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Ghana Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
During your stay as a Physiotherapy intern in Ghana you will live with a local host family. There is plenty to do in Ghana, and as our most popular destination, you can spend your free time with the large Projects Abroad volunteer community.
Physiotherapy internships in Ghana are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
