Volunteer works with hospital staff on a Midwifery project in Sri Lanka

Interning on a Projects Abroad Midwifery internship in Sri Lanka is an opportunity for midwifery students to gain a great deal of international work-experience in a maternity hospital or the maternity units of larger hospitals. You will find the facilities are generally of a basic standard, so you may witness different midwifery practice than you are used to in North America.

Your exact role within the hospital will be determined by your level of midwifery experience as well as the enthusiasm and effort which you show to the local staff. You will have your own supervisor who will ensure that you have the opportunity to learn as much as possible during your internship. As a Midwifery intern, you will mainly shadow staff, and learn by observing. By showing initiative and eagerness, you can earn the trust of the local medical staff and can be give more responsibility.

Interning Abroad as a Midwife in Sri Lanka with Projects Abroad

We have Midwifery internships based in the coastal towns of Panadura and Kalutara (about 27 miles south of Colombo). You could intern in a variety of maternity units such as pre-natal, labor wards, theatre, and post-natal.

There are also opportunities to spend time at a hospital specializing in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. This will give you a well-rounded understanding of medicine and healthcare in Sri Lanka.

Projects Abroad also organizes regular medical outreach work and workshops for our medical interns. Although not always directly related to Midwifery, this will give you a greater understanding of the medical system in Sri Lanka.

On a monthly basis, you can travel to a local town to carry out basic medical checks on the local community, while being supervised and supported by qualified doctors. This provides you with the opportunity to carry out vital work in a community based environment.

Interns should be a minimum of 17 years old join the Midwifery project in Sri Lanka.

You will live with a Projects Abroad local host family while interning as a Midwife. In your free time you will be able to explore the coast and towns of the region with the volunteer community.
