Volunteer on the Dentistry project working in a hospital in Lome, Togo

A Projects Abroad Dentistry internship in Togo is an ideal way to gain international experience and contribute to local communities. Dentistry in Togo will be different from what you are used to at home and will open your eyes to the reality of treatment in a developing country.

Dentistry interns will be placed at a public hospital that is also a teaching and research facility. As Dentistry intern, your role will be that of an intern. Given that the dentistry profession in Togo is very different from what you may be used to, you will spend the first week observing skilled professionals.

As you get more familiar with treatments and the way things are done in Togo, and if you have demonstrated a good knowledge of dentistry, you may be given more responsibility. You could then help with consultations, general check-ups, and observe more complex procedures, assisting the dentist by being an extra pair of hands.

Interning Abroad as a Dentist in Togo with Projects Abroad

You could also take part in dental outreach work with qualified dentistry volunteers. Here you could help assist the qualified dentists in schools and care centres while they do dental checks and carry out minor procedures. You can help with oral hygiene awareness, for example by showing the children how to brush their teeth properly.

Interns on all medical related projects in Togo need an intermediate level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

You will live with a Togolese host family while interning as a dentist. You will have access to our lively Projects Abroad volunteer community and have the opportunity to explore the area with them on your time off from your internship. There is plenty to do in Lomé with the beach never far away, as well as plenty of restaurants and local live music venues.

Dentistry internships in Togo are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
