The Projects Abroad Dentistry program in Peru, based in the World-Heritage city of Cuzco, is providing interns with the opportunity to learn about the dentistry profession in a developing country. You will be placed in one of the public health centers that have dental clinics attached to them.
As an intern, your role is mainly observational and you will shadow dentists and other dental staff throughout their day. You will see routine dental work including extractions, fillings, and caps, as well as preventative dentistry. Depending on your qualifications and by showing initiative and enthusiasm, you may be asked to support the local staff with their duties.
Interning Abroad as a Dentist with Projects Abroad
Interns on the dentistry placements usually work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free. Your hours are usually 8am to 1pm, although there may be other work available in the afternoons. Previous interns have also got involved in activities such as running dental health workshops in the local community.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Peru Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
For all Dentistry internships in Peru, you need at least intermediate Spanish.
During your time in Peru, you will stay with one of our local host families, and experience first-hand the warm hospitality of the Peruvian people. Living in Peru also gives you a great opportunity to practice your Spanish. On weekends, you can explore Cuzco and the surrounding region with our volunteer community.
While you’re in Peru, you might also consider joining a 1 week Conservation & Environment Project. For more information, please visit our Rainforest Conservation & Environment Project in Peru page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
