On Projects Abroad's Dentistry Project in Jamaica, you can gain international experience interning at a dental clinic under qualified local dentists in and around Mandeville.
The clinic where you will work deals with the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of dental problems. They also investigate and treat mouth disorders and carry out surgical treatment of deformities of the mouth and jaw. This is an opportunity for you to enhance your dentistry knowledge by observing disorders and treatments you do not usually see at home, and we encourage you to ask questions and make notes to get the most out of your experience.
You must have completed at least one year of dentistry-related studies to participate on this project and you should be a minimum of 18 years old.
Interning at a Dental Clinic in Jamaica with Projects Abroad
As an intern, your role will be mainly observational. If you show enthusiasm and develop good working relationships with the staff, you may be able to take on a more direct role.
You will be based in the dentistry ward of the Mandeville Comprehensive Health Department, where a clinic operates daily. Twice a week you can also work in other health departments that run dental clinics. You will also shadow dental nurses as they carry out clinics in rural areas where there are no permanent facilities.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Jamaica Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
While interning with Projects Abroad you will live with a local Jamaican host family and you can spend your free time exploring Mandeville with other volunteers from our volunteer community.
Dentistry internships in Jamaica are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills volunteering abroad as a professional in Jamaica.
