If you choose to take your Nursing Elective in Togo, you could be placed in hospitals, clinics or HIV/Aids centres located in the Togolese capital of Lomé. As a student nurse, you will see a wide variety of treatments and also provide much-needed support to patients. You will be placed alongside hard working and dedicated staff and you will experience how nursing is practiced in a developing country.
You must be a nursing student to do an Elective placement. Projects Abroad can coordinate with your university to make sure you are allocated a placement that will fulfill the requirements of your elective module. In-country staff will be on hand to help you with any pre-departure issues and will support you throughout your stay.
You will have a dedicated supervisor while you are in Togo. They will be a qualified member of staff who will mentor you, discussing specific case studies with you and making sure you are getting the most from your time in their medical facility.
Nursing Student Electives in Togo with Projects Abroad
The hospitals and clinics where we work provide an excellent backdrop for learning and improving your nursing and healthcare skills. You will find yourself coming into contact with conditions that you would not normally see in Europe or North America, such as malaria and typhoid, on an almost daily basis.
The Togolese approach to treatment of patients is very different to what you will be used to. As such, you will spend a minimum of a week simply observing. As you get familiar with treatments and the way things are done here in Togo, and if you have demonstrated a good knowledge of nursing, you may get a more hands-on role.
Students on all medical related projects in Togo must speak a good level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.
While interning in Togo, you will stay with one of our local host families where you will able to really refine your French speaking skills. You will also be able to explore what the local area has to offer with our Projects Abroad volunteer community.
Nursing Student Electives in Togo are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
