Nursing Electives in Tanzania

If you take your Nursing Elective in Tanzania you will see how resourceful nurses work in hospitals that suffer from a lack of funding and poor equipment. Facilities in the hospitals and health clinics are basic and you must expect to witness some shocking cases. You will not just be gaining work experience, but also providing valuable support to a busy profession in a developing country.

You must be a nursing student to do an Elective placement. Projects Abroad will be available to work with your university to make sure your placement can fulfill the requirements of your Elective. Our in-country staff is experienced in coordinating with Elective students. When you are in Tanzania you will have a dedicated supervisor who is a qualified member of staff.

Your supervisor will be your mentor throughout your stay. They will be available to discuss specific cases with you, and answer your questions. The staff you will be placed with will ensure you learn a lot about Nursing in their medical facility.

Nursing Student Electives in Tanzania with Projects Abroad

You will be placed in either a health clinic or a large government hospital. Where you are placed will depend upon your chosen specialty. You could spend time in surgery, maternity, general medicine, pediatrics, palliative care and work with HIV patients.

Your role will be mainly observational and you will shadow doctors and nurses throughout their day. This may include ward rounds, clinics and observing operations. If you make the effort to become a valuable part of the team, you are likely to be given more to do. This may include taking blood pressure, weighing and measuring patients, dressing wounds, passing equipment, and removing casts.

Projects Abroad organizes regular medical outreach projects and workshops in Moshi and Arusha. These involve providing healthcare to disadvantaged communities in outlying areas who would otherwise not have access to medical care. This provides you with the opportunity to carry out extremely valuable work in a community based environment and will give you a greater understanding of the medical system in Tanzania.

While you are interning as a nurse in Tanzania, you will live with one of our local host families. You can spend your free time with our enthusiastic volunteer community, exploring the area and travelling together.

Nursing Student Electives in Tanzania are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
