Taking your Medicine Elective located in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia will give you a great deal of valuable work experience supported by some of the top doctors and surgeons in the country. You must be a medical student to do an Elective placement. Medicine Elective placements in Mongolia are based in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, where you will be working in busy central hospitals. Medicine and healthcare practice in Mongolia is typically similar to those of Europe and North America, but there are also a number of private complementary medical clinics where you can spend some time to help broaden your medicine and healthcare experience.
You will find the facilities are generally of a very basic standard and patients will often have travelled vast distances to attend appointments. You will learn a lot about the medical profession in a developing country while in Mongolia.
Projects Abroad are experienced in working with students wishing to take their elective placement abroad. We can coordinate with your university to ensure the requirements of your elective criteria can be met. Our in-country staff will communicate with you and help with any pre-departure paperwork. When in Mongolia, you will be assigned a supervisor who is a qualified doctor and experienced in mentoring Elective students.
Medical Student Electives in Mongolia with Projects Abroad
You will have a mainly observational role. You will shadow the local doctors while they work. The doctors are eager for you to achieve as much as possible during your placement and will be available to discuss specific cases and answer your questions. By showing enthusiasm and gaining the confidence of the doctors and nurses by proving your ability, you are likely to be given more to do. The supervisors on our Medicine placements in Mongolia have a lot to offer for enthusiastic interns.
Projects Abroad offers monthly workshops providing interns with lessons about traditional treatments, the history of the Mongolian healthcare system, and practical lessons on basic medical procedures - such as how to check blood pressure. We also organize regular medical outreaches for students. You may be involved in assisting with basic medical check-ups at a community centre for homeless people, or assisting with a hand hygiene campaign at one of the local hospitals. These help you to gain a greater understanding of the Mongolian healthcare system.
While you are in Mongolia, you will live with one of our hospitable Mongolian host families. You will become part of the Projects Abroad volunteer community. There is much to see in the area and a lively group of interns to experience it with.
Medical Student Electives in Mongolia are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
While you’re in Mongolia, you might also consider joining a 1 week Conservation & Environment Project. For more information, please visit our Nomad Project in Mongolia page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
Although it is not required for you to speak Mongolian to volunteer in Mongolia, learning a few basics is always helpful. You can also choose to do the Mongolian Language Course before or during your placement.
