The Projects Abroad Community project in Samoa gives volunteers the chance to fully immerse themselves in traditional Samoan village life and give back to the community. Whether you are volunteering on a gap year, career break, or a summer vacation, you can get involved in a variety of activities that will benefit the local people.
Samoans are always eager to learn and as a volunteer you have the chance to exchange ideas and stories. Volunteers teach in the village school in the morning and get involved in other activities in the afternoons. The school, which is the centre of the community, is where you will become a vital part of village life.
Other activities that volunteers may assist with in the afternoons include a drama group, gardening, exercise classes, and reading classes for children and adults. Volunteers are also able to create specific workshops that will benefit the community, such as vegetable growing, sustainability schemes, or healthy eating and living programs.
Community Volunteering in Samoa with Projects Abroad
During your time on the Community Village Project in Samoa, you will be able to experience day to day life in the village and learn about Samoan culture firsthand. You will live with a local host family, who will welcome you with open arms. They will teach you everything you need to know, from explaining how the village chief system works, to cooking and eating traditional cuisine.
All villages are on the main island of Upolu, and may be up to one hour drive from the capital Apia. Due to being in a more remote location, volunteers must be a minimum of 18 years old to be able to participate in this project.
This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
