Nursing volunteer dresses a child's wounds in Togo

Projects Abroad has Nursing internships available for interns who wish to make a difference in communities where access to basic treatment is limited. You will be able to work at hospitals, clinics, and HIV/AIDS centers located in the Togolese capital of Lomé. The placements are well-equipped by local standards and will give you a full experience of medical practice in a developing country.

As a Nursing intern, you will see a wide variety of treatments and also provide vital support to patients. The hospitals and clinics where we work provide an excellent backdrop for learning and improving your nursing and healthcare skills. You will find yourself coming into contact with conditions that you would not normally see in Europe or North America, such as malaria and typhoid, on an almost daily basis.

Your role will be that of a nursing intern. The Togolese approach to the treatment of patients is very different to what you will be used to. As such, you will spend a minimum of a week simply observing. As you get familiar with treatments and the way things are done in Togo and if you demonstrate a good knowledge of nursing, you may be given more responsibility.

Interning Abroad as a Nurse in Togo with Projects Abroad

Interns who have some experience and are already studying nursing, work at one of two public hospitals. There is the opportunity to work in a variety of departments such as pediatrics, obstetrics, ENT, and orthopedics.

If you have no experience but wish to intern in the nursing field you are welcome to join us in Togo. You will work with doctors and nurses in small private clinics where you can observe and learn from consultations and minor surgeries. There is also the option to volunteer at HIV/AIDS centers, which give free treatment and consultations to patients. Here you can help to raise awareness and teach about safety, acceptance, and tolerance.

You will have a dedicated Projects Abroad Medical Coordinator, who will act as your supervisor. They will introduce you at the hospital or clinic, discuss your interests with you, and confirm your schedule in agreement with the medical staff at the hospital or clinic for the duration of your internship.

Interns on all medical related projects in Togo need an intermediate level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

While volunteering in Togo you will stay with one of our welcoming local host families. You will be able to explore what the local area has to offer with our Projects Abroad volunteer community.

Nursing internships in Togo are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
