Learn French in Togo with Projects Abroad

If you're interested in volunteering in this destination, please contact us first before applying.

Although Togo gained independence from France in 1960, French still remains the official language of this West African nation. Numerous tribal languages are spoken throughout the country with Ewe being the main language used in Lomé alongside French.

French will be your main language of communication with the Togolese people. As you are interacting with locals while volunteering on any project in Togo, having some basic French is essential. If you feel your French needs to improve before you start a Teaching or Care project, a two to four week-long intensive French course is a good option. We also have a variety of other volunteer projects and internships in Senegal where your new language skills can be developed further.

On the French Language Course in Togo, you will receive 15 hours of one-to-one tuition per week with a qualified teacher. Each class will be tailored to your ability. After your class is over for the day, you will have plenty of time to practice your French conversation skills with your local host family. Lomé is also home to a lively French Cultural Center, which shows francophone films and hosts regular live music events.

You can also choose to study French while participating in a volunteer placement in Togo. Our 14-hour or 30-hour French language courses can be done alongside your volunteer placement in Togo to improve your language skills. If you are planning on volunteering abroad for twelve weeks or more, you could also complete a 60-hour course alongside your placement. For more information please visit our Language Add-ons page.
