Volunteer on the Public Health & French High School Special to provide medical care on outreaches in local communities in Togo, and start learning or improve your level of French. Use your experience on this project to boost your practical medical knowledge and skills and gain international experience by living and working in a different country.
This project is in Togo’s capital city, Lomé, which is a melting pot of French and African cultures. Many rural communities around the city are located far away from clinics and hospitals, which means that people don’t have access to health care services and treatment they need.
During your outreaches, you will screen patients for health problems and illnesses, and also get to observe local medical professionals as they diagnose and recommend treatment. In addition to outreaches, you will also gain experience in a clinical setting by observing medical professionals while they work at a local clinic.
You French lessons will take place in the afternoons and will be given by a qualified local teacher. These lessons will help you improve your communication with the patients you treat and other locals. Some classes will focus on medical terminology you can use during your outreach work, but you will also learn a wide range of other French vocabulary.
During your time in Togo you can take part in various activities:
- Work alongside medical professionals during outreach campaigns
- Run general screening tests, such as taking blood sugar levels, calculating body mass index, and measuring blood pressure
- Attend 20 hours of French classes with a professional teacher who will adjust lessons according to your skill level
- Observe medical professionals at a clinic once a week
By living with a local host family, you will get to experience local Togolese culture. You can practice your newly learnt French with your hosts over a traditional, home-cooked meal.
We have organized several activities for you to enjoy while you are not volunteering. Learn to do local crafts, move to the rhythm of djembe drums during traditional music and dance lessons, and learn some basic vocabulary in the indigenous local language, Ewe! Over the weekend, our local staff will take you and the other volunteers on a trip to Kaplime, a mountain village surrounded by cocoa plantations. Here you will explore the beautiful waterfalls of Womé and find out about more traditional ways of life in West Africa.
