Volunteers practices Arts & Crafts on the Creative Arts project in Togo

Volunteers on Projects Abroad’s Arts & Crafts project in Togo live and work in the capital city, Lomé. Helping in the workshop of an NGO, you will learn how to create local arts and crafts that can then be sold to further finance projects of Portrait d’Afrique-Togo, a local NGO.

As a volunteer you will also use the skills you develop to teach young artists from disadvantaged backgrounds from the local community, helping them develop their talents and creativity.

This project is welcomes anybody with an interest in arts & crafts and provides volunteers with an interesting and worthwhile way to learn more about Togolese culture.

Volunteering on the Arts & Crafts Project with Projects Abroad

Volunteers practice drumming on the performing arts project in Togo with Projects Abroad

The majority of your time as a volunteer will be spent working alongside local artists in the workshop. They will teach you local pottery practices and show you how to make earrings, bracelets, and other jewelry using materials such as shells and beads. You will also learn how to print T-shirts and how to make batik, a traditional decorative fabric.

Volunteers then put the skills they have gained in the workshop to good use visiting local orphanages. By encouraging the young artists and nurturing their talents, you can help them build a future for themselves through their artwork and the confidence they gain.

This project is not a fulltime project so we recommend combining it with a few more hours of work per week. For those interested in learning about West African dance and djembe drumming, you can take lessons to gain greater insight into Togolese culture. These lessons are perfect for enthusiastic and creative volunteers who have a musical flair. Music is at the heart of Togolese culture, so those with a passion for music will find this placement both enjoyable and rewarding.

Alternatively, you could easily combine the Arts & Crafts project with a Care, Teaching, or Medical project in Togo. Please let us know which options interest you when you apply.

The Arts & Crafts project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
