A Projects Abroad Physiotherapy internship in Sri Lanka is a unique opportunity to gain international work experience in the field of physiotherapy. As a Physiotherapy intern, you will mainly work in government hospitals.
Hospitals in Sri Lanka are large, with over two hundred doctors working in all departments. You will be busy and can gain a great deal from your time here. You will shadow existing staff, who even though they are very busy, are eager to give you time so you can learn from them.
By building a good relationship with the local staff and showing how enthusiastic you are, you may find you are given more responsibility. You could work with a variety of patients such as those needing rehabilitation, elderly people, and stroke victims.
Physiotherapy interns in Sri Lanka should be a minimum of 18 years old.
Interning Abroad as a Physical Therapist in Sri Lanka
If you prefer, you can work in a care home with disabled children. Children here benefit from one-on-one treatment that is not just physically beneficial, but can also help stimulate them mentally too. This is a placement with severely disabled children and the work will be intense. Anyone who has physiotherapy experience can provide vital assistance to this care home.
Interns also get involved in identifying and working with children from local orphanages that need to receive physiotherapy or other treatments. As a Physiotherapy intern, your exact role will depend on your personal level of experience and knowledge. You will work on a one-on-one basis with each child giving them important physiotherapy support and also concentrated attention, which will help them thrive.
While in Sri Lanka, you will live with one of our host families, which is a chance to experience Sri Lankan culture first-hand. We also have a lively Projects Abroad volunteer community you can spend your time with while exploring the coastal towns of the surrounding region.
Physiotherapy internships in Sri Lanka are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Sri Lanka Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
