Nursing volunteer in Senegal works with children on the street

Projects Abroad offers a Nursing internship in Senegal to those looking to gain international work experience in a developing country. As a Nursing intern in Senegal, you will work in public hospitals in and around the city of St Louis. You will have the opportunity to observe patients with a variety of medical conditions and can also choose to specialize in areas such as pediatrics and maternity wards.

You may also get the chance to go out on healthcare outreach projects in the local community, where you will work with local street children, known as Talibés. This can be a chance for you to provide neglected children with the medical care they desperately need.

Interning Abroad as a Nurse in Senegal with Projects Abroad

As an intern, you will be working alongside talented local doctors and nurses. Showing enthusiasm and initiative and building a good relationship with your colleagues will enable you to get the most out of your internship. Please be aware that the facilities will be basic and treatments are sometimes not of the same standard as those in North America.

You should be prepared to see some shocking cases and try not to get emotionally involved with the patients. Your working hours will usually be decided on a weekly basis, in cooperation with your supervisor and a Projects Abroad staff member.

Interns in Senegal live with a host family. Living with a local family gives you the opportunity to learn more about Senegalese culture and daily life, as well as giving you the chance to practice French.  On weekends, you can explore the city and surrounding areas.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Senegal Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

If you wish to do a Nursing project with us in Senegal, you must be a recent graduate or a qualified nurse and have an intermediate level of French.
