Maternity unit on a Midwifery project for volunteers in Senegal

A Midwifery internship in Senegal with Projects Abroad will provide you with an eye opening opportunity to experience maternity care in some of the poorest medical institutions in the developing world. As a Midwifery intern in Senegal you will have the chance to gain insight into how a midwifery practice operates with poor facilities and lack of funds.

Midwifery interns are placed in a hospital maternity unit. Here you will work with staff throughout the maternity unit. You can be involved in pre-natal and post-natal care, as well as the labor itself. By becoming part of the team and showing eagerness and initiative to get involved, you may be given more to do. In some of our placements you could also be involved in gynecology and family planning.

All Midwifery interns in Senegal must be recent graduates or qualified midwives by the time they join this project. Some of our placements will only accept students in their fourth or fifth year of studies.

Interns also need an intermediate level of conversational French. It is crucial that you can communicate in French because most of the staff and patients do not speak English. A copy of your resume will be requested after you have applied, so each placement can be tailored to your level of experience and interests.

Interning Abroad as a Midwife in Senegal with Projects Abroad

All Midwifery interns should be aware that the facilities they will be working at are basic and treatments are sometimes not of the standard you would expect, coming from a more developed country. You could witness challenging births and you are advised not to get emotionally involved with the patients.

Your exact working hours will usually be decided on a weekly basis, in cooperation with your supervisor and a Projects Abroad staff member.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Senegal Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

When interning in Senegal, you will live with a local host family. This will give you the chance to improve your French speaking skills and you will also be able to pick up some Wolof, the local language. Many of our host families live in close proximity to each other so socializing with other volunteers is easy. In your free time, there is a great deal to see and explore in the local area.

If you do not have the required experience to be accepted on one of our Midwifery internships then you may be interested in our General Care Projects in Senegal.
