A wall at a Senegalese kindergarten gets a new mural painted by Projects Abroad High School Special volunteers

Based in the picturesque town of St Louis in northern Senegal, this placement combines intensive French lessons with the chance to travel with purpose and experience a taste of Senegalese culture. If you are looking to experience cultural immersion and give back to an underprivileged community while improving your language skills, this worthwhile project is a great option for you.

Your French classes will take place every morning for two hours, five days a week. Classes are interactive and you will be given encouragement every step of the way. Whether you're mastering the basics or improving the French you already know, the lessons will be adjusted to your level. You can put your new knowledge into practice on a daily basis as you get to know St. Louis and mix with local people. Living with a host family also gives you the opportunity to practice your conversation further, as you chat and share news about your day over dinner!

Each afternoon during your placement you will work closely with volunteers from the Care & Community Project to renovate and decorate classrooms in a local kindergarten. This will help create a clean and colorful environment for children to return to after their summer vacation, and the local staff will appreciate your efforts.

Over the weekend you will spend time visiting the historic sites in and around St Louis with the other volunteers and our local Projects Abroad staff. We also arrange various social activities throughout the two weeks including drum and dance lessons and a meal at a local restaurant.
