Volunteers with a passion for sports and an interest in helping others progress in their own sporting capability can contribute to the Projects Abroad Physical Education project in Samoa. Whether you are on a gap year or a career break, you can help children by nurturing their sporting abilities and talents and teaching them about teamwork.
As a volunteer on this project, you will work in a local school in Samoa and teach sports such as soccer, volleyball, and rugby, as well as general games. Health and Physical Education (HPE) has been included in the curriculum of Samoan schools and is an area in great need of assistance. If you have any experience in organizing training programs or a background in general health and fitness, you could have a meaningful impact on this project.
Volunteers coaching sports in Samoan schools should expect to work a minimum of 6 hours per day, and will work with the different age groups according to the timetable. Most volunteers usually choose to assist with some general teaching for a few hours a day by combining the Teach Physical Education project with a Teaching project. This option continues during school breaks with our school vacation program.
Overall working at the school was not only fun and a new experience, but incredibly humbling and made me so grateful for the education I received back in England. The Samoan way is evident within every fiber of the children I got to interact with and I would say 100% that it was a life changing experience and one that I will never forget. Read more...
You can join the Teach Physical Education project in Samoa for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
