International Nursing Internships in Mexico

Project Overview
  • ROLE: To rotate through various different departments and learn from the experience of skilled local staff
  • REQUIREMENTS: Interns must be aged 18 years or older and speak basic Spanish
  • ACCOMMODATION: Host family
  • LENGTH OF PLACEMENT: From 2 weeks
  • START DATES: Flexible

As a Projects Abroad Nursing intern you can gain an international healthcare experience in Mexico working in city hospitals in Guadalajara. The hospitals are fast-paced, busy, and well-equipped.

Interns need to speak basic Spanish or higher to join our Nursing projects in Mexico. Many interns whose Spanish-language skills are not strong enough join a Teaching, Care, or Spanish Language project before starting their Nursing project. This gives them the opportunity to brush up their language skills before the medical part of their program.

Interning as a Nurse in Mexico with Projects Abroad

As a Nursing intern, you will rotate through different departments and be able to observe local staff. How much additional responsibility you get depends upon the hospital and your previous experience and qualifications. By showing initiative and building a good rapport with your colleagues, you can get more involved with the patients and doctors you are working alongside. You will generally assist the doctors and may be able to help clean wounds, put in IVs, put on casts, and even help with stitching.

If you prefer to specialize in one area of nursing then we can organize that for you. Departments include gynecology, pediatrics, and surgery. Doctors and nurses welcome interns with a range of experience if they are enthusiastic and eager to participate. Your supervisor will ensure you learn as much as possible about nursing and healthcare in Mexico.

In addition to the clinical experience, Projects Abroad interns on healthcare projects in Mexico usually have the opportunity once a month to visit one of our Care placements to give health workshops on topics like dental care and hygiene.

Interns in Mexico live with local host families. You will immerse yourself in Mexican day-to-day life and can explore Guadalajara and the surrounding area with others in the Projects Abroad volunteer community. Interns need to be a minimum of 18 years old to take part on a Nursing project in Mexico.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Mexico Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

Nursing internships in Mexico are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.

While you’re in Mexico, you might also consider joining a 1 week Conservation & Environment Project.
