In China, Projects Abroad interns work in major urban hospitals in Shanghai, all of which utilize a combination of Western and traditional Chinese medicine. The hospitals in Shanghai are large enough to enable a comprehensive medical experience in different areas all in one hospital.
While the facilities are modern, each hospital has a department devoted to traditional medicine to run in conjunction with modern medical practices in China. You may find that you want to concentrate your time in one area or simply learn about the interplay of both types and the holistic approach that is taken to medicine.
All Medicine & Healthcare interns in China must have completed at least one year of pre-medical or other healthcare related studies by the time they join this project.
Interning Abroad in Medicine in China with Projects Abroad
Medicine interns in China shadow the doctors in a variety of different departments, accompanying them on their ward rounds. You will rotate around departments spending 1-2 weeks in each one. While most of your time will be observing, you should be motivated to learn as much as you can from the doctors. You will gain the most by frequently asking questions and utilizing the chance to discuss individual cases and your understanding of them with your supervisor.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our China Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
You will live with other volunteers in a centrally-located shared apartment or with a local host family. There is so much to explore and discover in Shanghai, and our volunteer community in China is traditionally a lively and a varied one.
“Overall my time in Shanghai was a rich and rewarding experience, which has deeply impacted my life. There is no way that we could have experienced what we did in China, in any American hospital. The Chinese people as a whole were more likely to react better to us observing and participating in their medical treatment, than many of the people here in the United States. China was an amazing place to live, and I whole heartedly recommend the Projects Abroad Medicine in China Program to you. Prepare yourself for an educational and richly rewarding experience.” Read more...
Medicine internships in China are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
