- LENGTH OF PLACEMENT: From 1 week
Put your passion for animals first by volunteering on our Animal Care Project in San Pedro with Projects Abroad. In Belize, the number of stray dogs and cats is increasing. These unwanted pets are left to roam the streets without access to proper food, shelter, and basic care, and are forced to fend for themselves. This problem is only getting worse, as these stray dogs and cats continue to reproduce.
By volunteering on our Animal Care Project in Belize, you will help improve the lives of stray animals at a shelter, by caring for them, and giving them the love they deserve. You will work towards finding a solution to the problem of stray animals, which will contribute to alleviating the suffering of animals for years to come. This will positively benefit not only the dogs and cats you care for, but those who will be rescued in the future.
My role on the Animal Care Project in Belize
During your time in Belize, you will volunteer at an animal shelter and the only non-profit veterinary clinic in San Pedro. The clinic treats stray animals and provides subsidized medical care to the animals of low-income families in the city. You will get involved with hands-on work at the shelter and clinic, by taking part in some of the following activities:
- Daily feeding procedures
- Bathing of the dogs
- Cleaning the kennels
- Further maintenance of the property
- Daily inspections and weekly examinations of animals, to ensure that cats and dogs stay healthy
- Monthly preventative medicine administering
By caring for stray cats and dogs, you will be giving them the attention they need to adapt to life off the streets. The type of care that you will provide these animals with include:
- Walks on a regular basis
- Playful interaction and games
- Extended socialisation
You will be help the animals get used to people again, which will prepare them for the possibility of being adopted. You will also assist with the adoption process with the help of an adoption counsellor. Seeing an animal who has gone through many hardships leave with a loving family may be the highlight of your volunteer trip.
Community Outreach Work during the Animal Care Project in Belize
In developing communities in Belize, stray animals are often misunderstood and feared, and are therefore treated badly by people. Dogs are often trained to display aggressive behaviour for dog fighting, or have learned to be aggressive as a survival tactic. To combat these issues, you will be encouraged to help with education programs in the community and in primary schools, to help locals better understand dogs, and treat them with more care.
Volunteering with animals in Belize will allow you to gain valuable practical experience that is rewarding and can be added to your CV or resume. You will gain new skills, experience personal growth, and make an impact on the local community. This will happen all while living and working in a developing country, making your time abroad an eye-opening cultural experience.
