By volunteering with Projects Abroad on a Care project in Belize, you will contribute by supporting disadvantaged children in kindergartens or a primary school through educational development activities. Whether you are on a gap year, career break, or looking to experience meaningful travel over a vacation, you will have an important role to play and your impact will be greatly appreciated in the community.
In Belize, many children enter school without knowing any English, and some students are still illiterate when they graduate. You can have a crucial role in improving the literacy of the children you interact with during this project.
Although there are kindergartens and schools in Belize that provide quality education for children, many families are not able to afford extra teaching support, like tutoring, that is often needed for a child reach their full potential.
Our Care placements are based in the town of San Pedro.
Volunteering in Kindergartens in Belize with Projects Abroad
In Belize, Projects Abroad works with kindergartens and a primary school that provide care and education to children from impoverished backgrounds. These placements are often understaffed and have limited resources, so they are in desperate need of volunteers to help give children the best care possible. As a volunteer, you will be a welcome pair of helping hands for the local staff, who are often too busy to give the children the individual attention they need.
You will help with day-to-day practical tasks, such as ensuring that the young children have been washed and fed, as well as organizing creative and physical activities such as arts & crafts and games and teaching basic literacy and numeracy and songs. Volunteers often also assist the local staff with tasks such as washing dishes and cleaning, which are essential to the daily running of the kindergartens.
With the older children, volunteers can help with homework, and can have one-on-one sessions with children who are struggling with numeracy and literacy. You could also play sports such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball, and help kids develop their team skills.
Whether you are helping children learn to read, playing sports with them, or teaching them a new game, the time and attention you give them children hugely beneficial. Any skills you have to offer are welcome.
During the summer, we run summer camps for children at these placements, and you can help us do so. Help us design and run a camp that keeps children active and learning during their summer holidays. The focus of the camp will be early childhood development.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Belize Care Management Plan.
Your Role as a Care Volunteer in Belize
Social development, friendship, and support are the key things you can offer as a volunteer. Most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel.
Projects Abroad is happy to provide extra help to volunteers working on Care projects. This may include buying some paints or art materials or arranging a day where all the volunteers in Belize help to renovate a play area at one of the kindergartens. Suggestions from volunteers are welcomed and we are open to any ideas you may have to help benefit the lives of the children with whom you are working.
This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
While you’re in Belize, you might also consider joining a 1 week Conservation & Environment Project. For more information, please visit our Diving & Marine Conservation in Belize Project page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
