Volunteers Embrace World Environment Day in Thailand
"Planet Earth is our shared island; let us join forces to protect it.” - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Each year on the 5th of June, World Environment Day is celebrated to create worldwide awareness and encourage action for the conservation of our environment. In light of this day, volunteers on the Conservation in Thailand placement joined the Krabi Provinicial Administrative Organisation and welcomed school students from around the Krabi area to an educational day about the oceans and the environment.
A dive station was set up for the children to experience what it is like to dive in the ocean, volunteers did a presentation about the Conservation Project, and a quiz was held for the children to test their knowledge about the environment. Plants were also given to the children so that they can help the Earth.
Educating the local community is one of the cornerstones of the Conservation Project in Thailand. The project was established to help conserve the marine environment in the area through researching and protecting the coral reefs, tropical forest and coastal areas, as well as helping with community education, doing beach clean-ups and reforestation work.
