Steiner family gives back

Steiner familyThe myball.ch Project is an initiative which was started by the Steiner family from Switzerland, who wanted to help the many children who do not receive gifts. The aim of the project is to distribute balls to disadvantaged children in developing countries between the ages of four to 12-years-old so that they can experience the joy and happiness that receiving a gift brings.

These bright yellow balls will not only be used by the children in their playtime, but by using these balls, the children will develop motor and coordination skills which are necessary for their development.

Projects Abroad Jamaica has partnered with the Steiner family to distribute the balls in several communities in Jamaica. Mother and daughter, Yvonne and Katja Steiner, both past volunteers of Projects Abroad Jamaica, landed on the island on January 8th, 2014 to begin the preparations for the distribution of the balls.

The first shipment contained 5,000 balls and every 4 months, balls will be shipped to Jamaica so there will be an ongoing supply to ensure that each child receives a ball. The Social Development Commission in Montego Bay, St. James has also partnered with Projects Abroad Jamaica to assist in the logistics and distribution of the balls.

On January 16th the first 30 balls were distributed to children at the Anna Miller Basic School in Knockpatrick, Manchester Parish. Volunteers and Projects Abroad staff as well as Yvonne and Katja met the children, gave out the balls and played games with them. The remaining balls will be distributed at least twice per month to various communities.
