Projects Abroad names Greg Thomson as the new CEO
Projects Abroad would like to announce that Greg Thomson has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer. Greg assumed his role on August 15th 2016 and has succeeded Dr Peter Slowe, the company’s founder, who will remain in the company as the Executive Chair.
“Greg will be an excellent Chief Executive,” said Peter. “He knows Projects Abroad, has lots of relevant experience, and has been very successful in all the posts he has held. Above all, he is the right person because he believes in our mission and shares our values.”
Peter founded Projects Abroad in 1992, and has taken it from a small family-run affair and transformed it into one of the largest international volunteering organizations in the world, annually sending nearly 10 000 volunteers abroad to join various projects and internships. After 25 years leading from the front, Peter felt it was time to hand over the day-to-day running of the company.
“I am honoured to have been selected as Chief Executive,” said Greg, in response to the appointment. “Projects Abroad is a great company, with amazingly dedicated staff and tens of thousands of talented and passionate volunteers. There’s so much we want to do in the communities where we work. I’m eager to get on with this new and exciting challenge.”
Greg has a clear vision for the future of Projects Abroad and has put together a strategic plan and an executive team to help him implement this.
Having started his journey with Projects Abroad as a volunteer on the Teaching Project in China in 1999, Greg has grown with the company. He has worked in a variety of roles, including Country Director for Ghana and most recently as Operations Director. Greg grew up in Scotland and holds a BA in Politics from Edinburgh University.
“Peter has built an amazing company that has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people all around the world. I’d like to thank him for his hard work over the last two decades to make this company such a success.”
Peter will continue to be active in the company’s strategic planning, and will also focus on our associate charity, Tore’s Foundation.
